When I began writing my manuscript, “Slippers of Sand” (working title), over a year ago, I had no clue of God’s purpose for my life. I knew I loved to write. I knew I loved my kids. I had begun to meld my two loves a bit earlier when I landed the copy editor position at Mom Writer’s Literary Magazine – a magazine by moms for moms. Suddenly I wasn’t that mythical creature, Just-a-mom, anymore.

I started to think about things other than children, laundry, dishes, sports, dishes, laundry…laundry. I hate laundry. Suddenly, I began reading and editing works from moms all over the world via the Internet. My next break came when I became columnist of Just Another Manic Momday. Now my voice was heard. And my pride soared.

Even the most Pollyanna mom can only derive so much satisfaction from changing diapers, running errands and helping with homework. She was made for more; we were all created for more. And when my four boys began to require less day-to-day care I found myself with a pretty shaky purpose in life. Surely God had another plan for me, didn’t He?

Most happily, God did have another plan for me, a continuing plan. My sons are now ages 18-23. I have survived 25 years of marriage, and thankfully, each day I am fortified to press forward together with my five men. We six live under one roof as my sons work their ways through college.

I will not sugarcoat my words to you. When I shut my bedroom door, gather my thoughts and begin to write, you are here with me. You keep me sane. Surely you shall dub me a complainer when you get to know me, but sometimes I just need to vent knowing that you understand. My men don’t understand. I haven’t yet invited any of them to read a morsel of “Slippers of Sand.” They wouldn’t get it. But you would. You’re a mom. And I’m everymom.

Once my book is published (note my optimism!) you can experience my year-long journey firsthand, and come to understand the immense faith I place in God’s plan for the rest of my life, now that the baby years and sports years are behind me. God’s touch is everywhere in all things. I have emerged from a dark, questioning time – out into God’s light. I credit Him completely for my rescue. God is my lifesaver.

I invite you moms to visit my Web site as often as you may carve out a few minutes of time for yourself. I also encourage you to experience the 3 Minute Retreat on my home page, courtesy of Loyola Press. I hope to share my ups, downs and turnarounds through my writing, my poems and anything else I find along my way which may be beneficial to us on our journeys.

Please feel free to share your Mom Moments, whether they be hilarious, heart-wrenching or pathetic. We’ve all been there. I look forward to finding God in you and hopefully, you’ll catch some glimpses too!

P.S. Just so you know… you pronounce my last name like “Locker,” but it’s spelled Locher. Now you can sleep tonight!
